At the end of the dinner the other person calls the waiter and asks for the bill. You kindly tell them, there is no need. The bill has already been payed. Again, no worries since I invited the other person.
Then the guest demands to see the waiter. Demands the waiter to cancel my credit card for the dinner. And recharge the it on the guests credit card. The waiter was so confused. The guest kept on and on until the waiter, gestured OK, just be quite lady. Then turning to me, and saying, you can pay some other time, not today.
If this happened in your life, would you feel pissed off? Would you think that person was a proud idiot?
You tell someone , you are inviting them to dinner. During the dinner you quietly to pay the bill.

Then you do not deem it patronising, to require one's guest to submit to one's will, without consulting them first and refusing to negotiate once it proves to be the hill they wish to die on?
Nay, I would not. People have all sorts of preferences and an excellent host or friend knows how to work around them. I am neither, nevertheless would at least try to respect those when possible. In my opinion, money is cheap and giving it away unsolicited is not a sign of generosity.
