Hi. My name is Maxim. I am russian and since I was at school people around me (including my schoolmates) used to mock me on my pronunciation of Churchill's name. It was not always I knew English language, but the sounds were naturally familiar to me. So I made my pronunciation of Churchill's name as [ˈʧɜːʧɪl ] which i always knew was the only one correct pronunciation. But in our Russian books of the World History the name of that very known character is spelled as "Черчель" which only pronunces as [ 'ʧ e : ʧ i l ]. And my schoolmates so as my teacher of the history felt their always duty to make an needless point to correct me on that, which was irritating enough.
I was okay with those marks till today, when I suddenly felt the need to check on the transcription of the word in English. In fact I even had no need of that transcription as in English Ch and U always sounds as [ˈʧɜ ] but never as [ ˈʧ e ]. Now imagine what i feel now. I think I have to address my claim to our Ministry of Education public references.
