Lack of sleep can cause mental problems and eventually death, yes. However, the good news is that even short periods of sleep (15-20 minutes) are enough to keep you going. I spent a summer where I didn't sleep more than 45 minutes a day. I was ill, admittedly, and hallucinating, but I was still alive.
Your body will generally shut down for sleep when things are getting critical. The only people that die from sleep deprivation are people like prisoners of war who aren't allowed to sleep (and keep being poked with a sharp stick or electrocuted when they nod off).
Sleep is an automated process, and if we don't sleep we won’t die. When you need to sleep, you will sleep, and if you can't sleep, lay down and close your eyes, think of God, trust God, and believe that life and death are in the hands of the Divine. You did not choose how you were born, where you were born, when you were born, and you will not choose how, when and where you will die. You must realize that birth and death are not in your hands. Some people sleep more time, some people don't sleep so much - it hardly matters. Because you are worried about not sleeping. you are unable to sleep. Therefore, stop worrying, and start enjoying life. Live with humour, keep yourself busy so that you are tired. I can guarantee that if you tire yourself beyond your understanding, you will fall asleep.
