In the north the slave would be free to own property, have a business, be able to vote, be able to have a family and children, be considered a human being, could go to school.
In the south be considered an animal, owned and sold or auctioned at slave markets like cattle, no right to own anything, if they had children the children would be sold, forced to work dawn to dusk, never a hope for freedom, never allowed to be educated, wear chains, be whipped, be branded, be murdered if they tried to run away or have a foot cut off so the could not.
Which do you think would be their choice?
