based on what I have read and the documentaries i have watched, the ancient Egyptians believed that the eyes of the cat were a doorway into another world. The underworld if i remember correctly.

All throughout earth's history there have been many religions that worshipped animals in the place of God and believed animals to have supernatural powers. Many in India worship animals.
