Why the overall purpose the insurers have for investing?

An insurer promises to pay money in defined circumstances. They don't just pull paper money out of a till, they invest that money so they can be sure they have enough to cover anything that comes up. Quite often an insurer will take a policy from another insurer so that they can share large payments.
