Why should scientific illustrations be drawn to scale?

It's always good to draw to scale in anything, doesn't matter what it is. There are legal reasons behind it. If they are instructions, then not doing it to scale can cause some major problems. There is also the possibility it will be seen by posterity. It also helps others to envision what you're trying to get across. If it's not to scale someone might see something different.
