Why server computers often have connected hard drives?

A server simply cannot store data without "storage hardware" such as an HDD or SSD. A server is nothing more than a computer connected to a network used and formatted primarily or entirely for data storage and/or networking. Can't store or share data without hard drives, even cloud storage is powered by network attached servers running a physical storage system.
