Why oxygen is needed on mountaineous regions?

Think of all the air in a section of the world that is infinitely tall. The pressure from the air above increase as you go down towards earth. Therefore there is much more pressure below sealevel than at mountain regions. Then when you get to mountainous regions there is less pressure making air less dense and particles spread at greater distances. This decreases the oxygen your lungs can pull in therefore you need artificial oxygen the higher you go up.

It depends how high the mountains are. At very high altitudes, the oxygen is very thin, so it's difficult, if not impossible, for a person to breath without oxygen tanks. It's usually 2500 meters(8200) in elevation that oxygen tanks are needed, although it depends on the person.
