Intelligence, like feathers or hair, has occurred for hundreds of millions of years. In the last 65 million years, intelligence has been a requirement for alpha status. Why is the sole epitome a primate? Why aren't there any competitors?
Why isn't intelligence a convergent destination?

Intelligence is not like feathers or hair. It is an imaginary concept, not clearly defined.
Alpha status is clearly defined: the alpha is the one that can beat the snot out of any other member of the pack. Intelligence is not required, although if the alpha is uncaring, members might go away and start another pack.
"Primate" is a special case, because we are primates, but otherwise has nothing to do with it.
