I began to notice this last Summer, an explosion of people going barefoot? At first I thought it was odd, but to be honest I wish I had the nerve to try it myself. It looks so liberating!

Like you stated - it's liberating! First, try just walking around your home barefoot.
Eons ago, when I had a garden; right after watering everything - I went barefoot in the muddy areas....it was like being a kid again.
Once you've accomplished that - then go to a park, take your shoes off and walk barefoot in the grass. I always go barefoot when I'm at the beach. Walking, barefoot, in the sand helps your body in many ways; the sand removes any built up thick areas on the bottom/sides of your feet and it helps build your calf muscles.
