Why is the virtual perpetual motion machine not realistic?

First a definition: A perpetual motion machine (virtual or otherwise) is a machine that can do work indefinitely without an energy source. This kind of machine is not realistic, as it would violate the first or second law of thermodynamics. The motion "appears" perpetual and may run for a very long time, but eventually resistance, gravity, etc. will prevail and the motion will end.
