Simply put, we know that the air in the sky is made up of many different molecules. We also know that light is naturally white, but it is a blend of every color in the spectrum. When light enters our atmosphere, those air molecules are good at absorbing most of the colors of light, but they aren't good at absorbing the color blue. Because of this, the color blue is reflected off these molecules, and that blue light is what enters our eyes. That's why the sky is blue.
That is very closely related to another question, "Why is the sky bright?" If it were just a matter of blue air, the sky would be bright on the side where the sun is, and dark on the other side. Both effects are due to the same cause: air scatters light. It scatters blue more than red, so the red of the mountains goes right through but the blue comes from all directions. And that is why the sky is bright blue and mountains are red or purple.
