Why is the concept of primary health care important?

Well, maybe it is and maybe it isn't. "Health care" is not the same as "health", nor is it the same as "insurance", but some people muddle them all together. When the government gets involved, nothing makes sense any more.

Your primary care provider will follow you, get to know you, do a through health history and yearly medical examination. This is very important, since usually when health concerns arise, it will be something new, and your pcp will know it's new or different from your health history. The pcp also has your health history on file in case you get admitted to a hospital, they can easily fax your info such past medical and surgical history. Your pcp can suggest certain yearly tests based on your family history, race, age, or pretty much any factor that makes you more at risk for cetain diseases. When it comes to meds, a pcp can follow up with a treatment, evaluate if it is workkng or not, and modify treatment if nevessary. It can avoid a trip to ED, since you can call pcp first and he or she might be able to help you, or even suggest that you go. There are many advantages to having a pcp, and sometimes only with a pcp one would be able to do certain treatments and having meds ordered and refilled, such as in case of chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, etc.
