Why is it that when an egg is pressed on its pointed sides it does not break but when pressed from?

It involves vectors, and that requires geometry, and that requires pictures. Imagine pushing on a pencil. If the pencil is horizontal the vectors go sideways, but you are pushing down so the pencil is weak. If the pencil is vertical the vector is also vertical, so the pencil is strong.
