It says in scripture that God created us in his image, and this made me originally think that God maybe looked like humans but apparently this isn't so. It says that God is beyond human understanding by his appearance, but why can't we comprehend how he looks? Why is it so hard for us to comprehend God's appearance and what is it about his appearance that we could not comprehend? We are intelligent beings and there is nothing that we couldn't learn to understand, so why is it different in the case of God's image? Couldn't we just find a way of comprehending his true likeness?
Someone please give me some insight as this is driving me insane not knowing... Thanks
Why is God's appearance beyond human understanding? I know why but I mean, why can't we understand?

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
John 4:24 God is a Spirit.
The word 'spirit' is also translated air, wind, or breath. You can't see a spirit. The image of a spirit is another spirit. A&E had spirits. When they ate the forbidden fruit it was the spirit that died, since the body and soul obviously went on living. They covered themsleves with leaves when they realized they were no longer clothed with spirit. And that is why the savior had to be sent to restore spirit to mankind.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
The first prophecy of the coming savior.
Isaiah 43:7 Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.
Those three words, formed, made, and created, do not mean the same thing. To create means to bring into existence something that never existed before. You can only create a thing once: after that you just make another one. Formed means pushed into shape. God formed man from dust, He made a soul (previously created in Genesis 1:21), and then created spirits for Adam and Eve. They were originally three part beings: body, soul, and spirit.
I can only assume you are of a evangelical or catholic faith based on your question, if so I wouldn't bother with such a minuet question rather I would ask myself about the whole essence of life itself we are all temporary beings. One "thing" is for sure we all share the same path and that path is death it may sound a bit crude but life is a confusing journey that's for sure.
Humans being made in God's image means that we are created with qualities such as his. Love, justice, wisdom, power.
We have the ability to feel and give love. When treated unfairly we have a sense of justice. We are thinking beings. We have strength and abilities.
God is a Spirit. (John 4:24) It's an invisible life form that exists in a different sphere, different dimension.
Here's some thoughts that may help a bit.
Picture a tiny insect on the floor. You look down on it and say "Hey there !"
Will this little thing understand you, comprehend who or what you are ?
No, right ? It lives in it's own world, it's dimension is so different from yours.
Now think of the mid sized star that we consider our Sun. Are we as humans able to look at it for long ?
Now think of the grand Universe. With it's billions of stars and galaxies.
Our Almighty Creator is beyond all that ! He is that mighty in power and presence.
We as humans don't have the physical ability to look at or comprehend someone so powerful. (Ex 33:20)
However, we can still understand him. And he wants us to. Our Creator has lovingly provided his inspired word the Bible and in there he informs us of who he is. What he loves and hates. What he approves of and what he promises. (2 Tim 3:16,17)
And he says 'Look around'. His personality can be understood by everything created. (Romans 1:20)
See his power in keeping our solar system in order. See his wisdom in providing the amazing water- and air cycle for this earth. See his love in the petals of a rose, a colorful sunset and in the laughter of a little baby.
Sincerely E
Compare our situation to that of a person who is blind from birth. Does his blindness completely prevent him from understanding the world around him? Not entirely. A blind person receives information in various ways that enable him to perceive the people, objects, and activities that surround him. “Vision isn’t in the eyes,” said one blind man. “It’s in the mind.”
In a similar way, although you cannot use your physical eyes to see God, you can use “the eyes of your heart” to see him. (Ephesians 1:18)
GOD is a Spirit,” invisible to human eyes. (John 4:24) Yet, the Bible reports that some people have, in a sense, seen God. (Hebrews 11:27) How is that possible? Can you really see “the invisible God”?—Colossians 1:15.

Can you smell with your eyes? Of course, you can't. You can only smell with your nose! Why? Because that sense perception is given to the nose and not to the eyes. So also we human beings have not been given the sense of comprehending God. We can realize God, we can't find God. Unfortunately, we search in a temple and in a church for God who lives in the temple of our heart. How will we find God? We are going outside when God lives within. When will we go in quest of the Truth, when will we realize and overcome our superstitions, our rituals, our beliefs that are untrue?
Genesis 1:26 says "Then God said: “Let us+ make man in our image,+ according to our likeness,+and let them have in subjection the fish of the sea and the flying creatures of the heavens and the domestic animals and all the earth and every creeping animal that is moving on the earth. So its just states that were made in his image as qualities, traits that mimic his. But because he is a spirit we wouldnt physically be made in his image, only as far as traits and qualities go.
