Why is glass used in windows and what other materials could be used instead?

you can use moscowit instead of glass but you can find this material in russia it's expensive but is very suitable for windows and other application like bathrooms and etc . we use glass because this material have a amurfus structure and it's very clear that sun radiation can pass the glass .
