Why is blood red in color?

The liquid that blood is made of is yellowish in colour and called plasma, the iron rich cells that transport food, oxygen and waste products around the bloodstream are the iron containing haemoglobin (red blood cells).
Because of the iron they appear bright red when oxygenated but turn the typical rusty brown colour you would expect of iron when exposed to the air after a few minutes and oxidize.
