Why is ac not used to cathodically protect a structure?

AC is alternating current. If you connect it to the existing cathode of the structure you would have to use a diode to block the positive half of the AC voltage and pass the negative half of the voltage to the cathode. You would also have to use a circuit or a transformer to lower the voltage to a safe level. Failure to do this could result in the electrocution of someone
