Total eclipses of the moon are very common, partial eclipses even more so. As the shadow of the Earth starts to near the moon the light scattered from our atmosphere will make the moon appear more and more red leading to a "blood moon", if it is a total eclipse the moon will start to disappear very similarly to an eclipse of the Sun. The shadow of the Earth is larger than the moon and so the whole process can take more than 45 minutes.
