I was just accepted to this college, and one of the forms I need to fill out a is a W9 form. My parents said this what companies need when hiring an independent contractor? I am a bit confused and the school can't get back with me until Monday, so I'm wondering if anyone knows now. I've looked it up and I see sometimes it's needed when scholarships are given, but I'm not receiving a scholarship. Thanks!

Form W9 is not for the IRS, it is for a company that is going to pay you for something. If they want you to fill it out anyway, go ahead and do so. It is meaningless.
Who needs a W9?
Anyone who does work for a company but is not a full-time employee of the company should fill out the W-9 federal income tax form. Freelancers and independent contractors may have to fill out many W-9 forms, depending on how many companies they work for over the course of a year.

When and why to use form W9:
Use Form W-9 to provide your correct TIN to the person who is required to file an information return with the IRS to report, for example, income paid to you, real estate transactions, mortgage interest you paid, acquisition or abandonment of secured property, cancellation of debt, or contributions you made to an IRA.

I answered the question you asked. The college is screwed up. All colleges I have attended were also screwed up.
Also you need to learn better manners. It is not nice to insult people who are trying to help you.
Thanks for the totally irrelevant answer. It seems that you didn't read the question. A COLLEGE that I'm going to ATTEND, not work for, asked for it. They're not paying me anything.
