Squidward & Spongebob are opposite types of people. Squidward is the typical old serious grumpy old man, not happy with his life, his popularity & his job. He deludes himself, as to the quality of his clarinet playing!
Spongebob is a light hearted, colourful character, popular, happy with his lot, is easily pleased & proud of his job of pattie chef at the Krusty Crab.
This both puzzles & worries Squidworth as it forces him to face who he really is!
Squidward does have other justified reasons, from the first day the pineapple fell off the boat & crushed his garden & Spongebob moving in to it & the continuous childish antics of Spongebob & Patrick which always back fire on Squidward.
The makers of Spongebob decided to base their characters on the seven deadly sins- Mr Krabs as Greed, Gary as Gluttony (this may not seem like such an obvious ones, but notice how spongebob is always saying 'Just gotta go feed Gary!' or 'Gary needs to be fed' or 'Gary's hungry' or some variation of that), Sandy as Pride, Patrick as Sloth, Plankton as Envy, Spongebob as lust (he loves everyone and everything), and Squidward as Wrath. Naturally, being based on the deadly sin of Wrath, Squidward would hate Spongebob.
