Why does my cat like to chew on and tear up cardboard boxes?

Cats teeth and claws continually grow. (also dogs) There is a better way than cardboard as the cat might end up eating some pieces. There are scratching posts and even logs which many of my cats found to be an excellent workout. Please make sure there is no resemblance to furniture or similar other good things you require to remain new.
