Why does Google Wallet ask for the last four digits of your SSN? Do I have to use it?

Google wallet requires the last four digits of your SSN to work.
Why does google need this information, can i trust them with it.
and is there another way for me to use google wallet without giving them this information.

google is using it for verification purposes to make sure you are who you say you are and yes you can trust google
