Why does Europe have different energy sources?

Im assuming you´re american? Well i live in Norway, here 99% of our energy comes from water. We use huge waterfalls to generate electricity from turbines and its 100 renewable and good for the environment. I can also take Denmark as an example, Denmark has a lot of flat land and its quite windy there as its close to the sea. So they use windmills for a lot of their energy. The same goes to the rest of Europe. Every country uses its resources to generate energy. As for the Unites States, they have a lot of fossile fuels, and as import drops these past years more and more of the oil reserves get used. In your question you ask why they have different energy sources, well i think most countries would think its easier to just burn fossile fuels to generate energy as this is the easiest of them all, but with emission regulations and all the hype around global warming they have to use new energy sources. Hope this answers your question.
