Why do you use WERE in this sentence? (English Grammar)?

Question

(English Grammar) Lines from Boston Legal (American legal drama-comedy) are shown below, I don't understand why there are using WERE but WAS.  Please explain. My English tutor couldn't explain!

In old mythology they say the squid is the only animal that can kill a shark. I used to work with her at Howard and Brock. And like the mysterious giant squid, the only evidence of her existence *WERE* the whopping sucker marks left on her victims.

"Were" is a verb in the english grammar. It is used when talking in the past tence, using the personal pronounces; you, they, we. 

Example:

You were eating that cake.
They were eating that cake.
We were eating that cake.
