I think for this reasons:
- in the beginning the Netherlands existed out of a lot of small kingdoms. Holland was one of the biggest and powerfull kingdoms of the netherlands.
- because Amsterdam is in Holland. Almost evry tourist who goos to the Netherlands goos to this city (as it wasnt the most touristic city, meby they called the Netherlands Groningen, Limburg or Brabant)
- its easier to say. Holland sound easier than The Netherlands.
- foodball suporters most time yell in Dutch .as the say Nederland, the people from other couteries dont understand it (because Nederland and the Netherlands sound not a lot as the same).s they yell Holland the people understand it (because its like holland in english)
- we get used to it. Its like usa called Amerika, UK called england or scotland, and Soviet-union called Soviet-russia
I hope i awnser your question like you wanted
