Why do people from Iran say they are "Persian"? Isn't that like me saying, "I'm from the Colonies?"?

It hasn't been called "Persia" for so long... So why don't they just say, "I'm Iranian"?

I,m from iran and i should say that our country was known as persia until 1935 and still some of us,reffer ourselves as persian.
