I know particles of matter have spaces between them, but my question is "WHY", why do they have spaces between them?

I'm pretty smart, but I never heard of any such principle. You can study chemistry and learn about a dozens or so kinds of charges, nuclear forces, and other stuff, but space between particles is an accident depending mostly on how they are shaped. and sometimes electric charge.
well, thnx for your answer.. :)
but i want to know what happens in solids? when a solid is at rest(not moving), then why do the partricles need to have spaces between them?..
we are talking about particles of matter..
There are 3 characteristics of particles of matter. One of which is "PARTICLES OF MATTER HAVE SPACES BETWEEN THEM"...So i wanted to know that why do the particles have spaces between them
