Why do modern right - wing groups reflect a long history of extremism?

It's an interesting question. I'm not sure the western world sees right-wing extremism as much as left-wing. If you mention socialism, everybody is up in arms. But if you mention scorched earth capitalism, everyone shrugs. I personally do think right-wing groups tend towards extremism and corruption, but it's difficult to find anyone who agrees.
