Why do many Americans hold their pens incorrectly and differently from Europeans, Asians etc.?

I see Americans hold pens in all kinds of different ways instead of the correct way used elsewhere. Are children taught how to hold the pen correctly? Have you noticed this phenomenon and what do you think about it?

Answer

American youngsters are not taught penmanship. When they get into the military, part of the basic training is to teach them how to sign a document or paycheck.
