I literally cannot avoid them. It raises the question, why update something that doesn't need to be updated? All these updates do is take up space on the hard drive. I've read about other users and their PC crashing because they were being bombarded with updates. Microsoft needs to cool the f down with these things. I have the same problem with my PS3, it's one of the reasons I don't play online that much anymore.

Apart from fixing bugs that come to the surface & reported during general use, updates are mostly security patches to protect against things like Zero day threates & provide malware removal tools. As the bad guys are always working to exploit your system, so must Microsoft work to protect you.
You do have the option of not installing updates, and I have some sympathy with you as a constantly patched system will run the risk introducing inefficencies & crashes. It is quite a challenge to regularly introduce reliable patches to such a vast range of different equipment, and mistakes will happen (Microsoft does employ Humans!). The professionals mitigate this by testing the updates before releasing company wide. You could do the same by taking an system backup image before update (patch tuesday), If you have problems, reinstall the backup, (another good reason to keep your system & data on different partitions or even drives.
I can understand that, but when the updates can cause your computer to crash that defeats the point of protecting your PC.
