Why do Americans sit on the floor?

I just came to US for college (in the midwest), and I am surprised that people sit on the floor and some people even take off their shoes in public area. Is that a kind of culture of Americans or culture for midwest?

I am surprised that you are surprised. Sitting on the floor is something we Americans don't even think about. We just sit, even if there is no furniture. 

I am not aware of anybody taking shoes off, except on a beach. But if someone does, nobody cares.
