Why did the settlers choose a peninsula on which to build Jamestown?

At the time the settler's thought it would be a good idea to stay in a place with clear water, but visible to the British Navy. They were under the influence at the time so they couldn't really make there own decisions. There one downside was the marshy land (Which you should have learned by now) which brought bug's and diseases.
