Why does Beckett even need the compass for anyways?

Beckett asked Norrington to steal Jack's compass because it's "unique". Jack gives the compass in Dead Man's Chest to find William Turner Jr. Jack said that Will has been press-ganged into Davy Jones' crew. Elizabeth questions him and says, "Davy Jones?" That got James Norrington's attention. James was involved in the Tortuga bar fight, was seriously drunk, and had puked twice outside on the dock. He turned around and said, "Oh please. The Captain of the Flying Dutchman?" Jack says James looked awful and asked what he was doing here. James replied and said that he hired him to join the crew. James said he can't help it that Jack's standards are "lax". Jack says that he smelled funny, only because he was thrown into the pig pen with gross pigs sniffing him. Elizabeth interrupts and said that she knew Jack was here to find Will. Jack said that he knows and he asked Elizabeth is that what you really want to do, Elizabeth says yes. She's worried about him. So Jack gives Elizabeth his "unique" compass and says that the compass points where you want most in your life. James, after puking, said that Jack's compass doesn't point north and tat it was broken. "Unique here having the meaning of *broken", is what James Norrington said.
So basically the compass points to where you want to go and places that were not meant to be found, as what Lucan said.
