What was going on to cause this to happen? Why new England? and Massachusetts especially?

At the time settlements were really only in the 13 colonies. And, Massachusetts was one of the more highly populated ones. It wasn't the only place to have been said that there were witches, just more widely known for the Salem which trials. So, if you would like look up claimed witches from New York, or anywhere.
The northern colonies were founded by groups of strongly superstitious fanatical Puritans who were convinced that the slightest misfortune befalling the community was the work of the devil.
Add social politics and the possibility of ergot poisoning to this volatile mix and we've got the highly sensationalized Salem witch trials which make Massachusetts look like the witch capitol of the world when it really isn't.
