I have been like that my whole life as well. For a while it frustrated me but in time I grew to enjoy that time of the day (night). In my case, I believe, it is due to an active imagination. My body and my mind have different plans when I lay down in bed. My dad falls asleep within 10 minutes of laying down, but I take anywhere from an hour and a half to 4 and a half hours. It can get pretty rough in the later hours but I find that embracing the private time rather than fighting it makes for a pretty restful and peaceful way to wind down. Perhaps, if you too have an active imagination, you can spend the first couple hours of your nights reflecting on your beliefs, studies, morals, goals and every thing else that is available or open to you. Enjoy the time you spend in your own mind and don't fight too hard against the time or you will just end up cranky in the morning.
Lack of exercise, poor diet and you really shouldn't be drinking any caffeine at all. That's why you can't sleep properly. Without knowing you properly that's all I can say.
People who sleep well eat properly in moderation, exercise regularly and don't take drugs (caffeine is a drug by the way).
