Why are the spectral lines discontinous when the light from an elemental gas like sodium is seen?

Elemental gases only emit certain colors, due to the fact that the light is emitted when an electron moves from a certain energy state to another, releasing a photon with a certain amount of energy -> color, the spectral pattern is diagnostic for the emitting element.
