Why are multistorey houses more common in big cities than in small towns and villages?

i think it depends on what potencial theses multi storey houses serve cause i know many like those type of homes thats why they build them but mostley they are energy efficent lots of acerage and family oreinted space for entertaining and big familys somewhat they might be what a family may be looking for
