Alcohol is soluble in water because it is a polar liquid that contains hydroxyl groups (OH-). That means it's positive and negative charges are not evenly distributed throughout the molecule, which is a similar configuration to a water molecule. That makes it hydrophilic, which means soluble in water.
It's atoms are smaller. Any liquid added to water you have the sum of the two parts. Add alcohol and you end up with less than the two liquids separately. Best done with over a litre of each, good experiment to trick you friends with. Maybe not the answer you need but a fun fact
