No company can, under U.S. law, deliberately hire fewer female employees than male employees. If you suspect that this is the case, then you can report them. If it is a big company however, they will likely win any case against them. Most companies however, are just as eager to hire women as they are men. There are fields that tend to be dominated by men due to the fact that men and women often make different career choices. For example, there are more female nurses and more male engineers because that is what males and females tend to choose. Individual career choice, regardless of gender, is not an indicator of a company's hiring practices.
Some companies ONLY hire women. There are some jobs that are done almost exclusively by women, such as sewing custom drapes or assembling electronic circuits. But men sell the drapes and men test the circuits. That is because men only rarely apply for the one job and women only rarely apply for the other.
