Well if this is work related and the person who doesn't have any friends is a boss, then I can understand why they would say that. Being a boss for a head company and what not is hard work. You would have the responsibility to have to fire people. If you make good friends in the company and have to fire them later on then I wouldn't think that the one being fired would be too pleased.
well if it relates to work or it relates to school or anything else I think I would think twice before I said something like that it could really hurt the wrong person unless that's why you would say something like that but take a second look at your situation before you say something like that you your self could get hurt.
