If two or more computers can exchange messages, that is a LAN, Local Area Network. If a network exists in two or more buildings or covers some distance, then it is called a WAN, Wide Area Network. Your service provider is a WAN. When WANS are able to exchange messages, then you have an internet. Portions of the internet are owned by various companies.
