"Book banning" is when somebody objects to a book being publicly displayed in a library or book store. www.google.com/search?q=banned+books

Many libraries will move banned books to a special display area. www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=939&bih=676&q=banned+book+library

"Illegal" is not a word that applies to the subject.

In public schools, "banned" means they removed the title from their list of recommended reading.
