is it a scientist

All of chemistry didn't arrive in one package, it was advanced slowly a bit at a time. If I had to think of one (modern) person who has advanced chemistry, though, it'd be Antoine Lavoisier. He was the first name that came to mind. Although I'd also have to mention John Dalton whose plaque I walk past on most days because he did most of his work in my city. If you want to track it back, the Babylonians were also great advancers of this science.
To answer your question directly, it's probably the Babylonians. The Middle East made huge advances in mathematics and science which the western world now claims for its own. We shouldn't forget things like this, or why algebra is called what it is. Al-Jabr.
