... plural noun? This question cannot be answered with Yes or No. Use the singular if you see the class as a group of students. Use the plural if you see the class as single students. Can you explain this in British English and how these rules works.

I would definitely say 'the class' is a singular noun and the correct answer would be: the class was...
However, as you already mentioned this depends on the way you use this word. Nevertheless, you use 'the class was' 90% of the time. So, whenever you struggle, use this phrase ;)

The government are doing a good job.[plural collective noun; plural verb]
But, does the class were have any other meaning ? And in British English and American this isnt the same, or...?
