A. The German sixth army under General von Paulus was trapped by a Soviet pincer movement enclosing a pocket west of Stalingrad as well as the city; roughly 280,000 men were trapped and 90,000 survived long enough to surrender to the Soviets only 5,000 survived to return to Germany. Since over 1 million were killed on each side, that is over 2 million total in a relatively small area and short time, 6 months, this is often considered the bloodiest battle of world war 2 also the most savage and the turning point of the war.
