Which is better.. calling the courthouse yourself about your case or have an attorney do it?

The fact you even have to ask this question means you should hire an attorney (unless you consider yourself a law expert). But first, ask yourself this question: is it really worth it? Are you willing to sacrifice months, even years of your time, and thousands of dollars out of pocket just win something back? Think about it (but don't get scared out of doing itm and if it's a criminal case do it right away, don't wait!)
