Instead of looking at one word at a time when you read, look at two words. That forces you to stop talking to yourself, so you are no longer limited to reading as fast as you can talk. You probably talk about 100 words per minute (WPM). The average college graduate reads 300 WPM. Just by looking at two words at a time you can read 600 WPM. Then by looking at a whole line at a time you can read much faster. The big benefit is that your memory expands along with your reading speed so you can remember the large volume of information you are taking in. With a little practice it is possible to read an entire page in two seconds with near total recall of the information on it.
Having increased your reading speed to a comfortable level, you can read magazines and newspapers when you are in a doctor's office, or waiting for a ride. When you read a normal amount you will notice that these prefixes show up a lot on English. Micro- means one millionth or anything very small, bio- means anything associated with life, geo- means anything associated with earth or rocks, and - this might take a bit to recall - odometer measures THE WAY.
Little facts like these are so widely known that they are considered a part of "common sense". And it is a failure of public schooling that you were never taught before this. I hope when you have a family you will help to find a better system to educate your children.
