Where did the term "digging for gold?" Come from, as in when you are caught picking your nose?

Yes I just picked my nose. Digging gold and going back for seconds. Brother would chase me with his often when he knew he would need shoes on and I had only socks on. Well that is so far traced back to me and brother in 1957. Photographic memory can be fun. Thank you.
